Chapter 9
The Motor Mfg. Co.’s Voiturette
This car is sometimes known as the miniature Panhard. It is shown in figs. 28 and 29, and a photograph is given in fig. 27.
The drawings explain themselves; the engine is stated to be five and a half horse-power; the car is fast, and a fair hill climber. The gear for speed changing is the ordinary Panhard gear (see 3, figs. 28 and 29); three pairs of spur wheels gear together, so that three forward speeds are obtained. The wheels slide laterally into gear, the engine, of course, being disconnected by means of the friction clutch 2 when changing speed, it being thrown out of gear by the treadle 41. The handle at the side working in the quadrant operates the gears by means of the bell crank and rod shown in the plan. The water is circulated by a small centrifugal pump worked by a friction wheel on the rim of the flywheel.
